With Thanksgiving
and Christmas inching closer and closer, it’s getting harder and harder to
ignore the thoughts of the heavenly desserts that accompany the holiday season!
Although there are many types of dreamy desserts, over at Bon’App our minds are
cloudy with thoughts of pie! Here are a few not only healthier, but also
unexpected approaches to some of our holiday favorites. The best part is that
they’re all under 300 calories and 10 grams of fat!
Frozen
Pumpkin Mousse Pie
We all
love a good ole traditional piece of pumpkin pie, but why not mix it up a bit!
This Frozen Pumpkin Mousse Pie is the perfect way to add a bit of surprise to
your holiday meal. With only 230 calories and 5g of fat per serving, this tasty
dish is an incredible alternative to traditional calorie packed pies. The
secret lies in the gingersnap raisin crust. By eliminating the usual pie crust,
you also eliminate the usual culprit of calories and fat.
Apple
Squares
Apple
pie is one of the most essential parts of any American holiday, but despite
fruit being one of the main ingredients some recipes pack up to 750 calories
per slice! Try a fun alternative like Apple Squares. These cute treats
have 253 calories and 10g of fat per serving. By replacing the usual shortening with a mix
of canola oil and butter it is easy to eliminate high amounts of trans fat.
Also, using whole-wheat pastry flour is a great way to add fiber.
Marmalade-Glazed
Orange Cheesecake
Usually
one of the most dangerous desserts, cheesecake is very easily adjusted for a
lower calorie alternative. Try this Marmalade-Glazed Orange Cheesecake recipe
to add a new twist to this holiday treat. With only 199 calories and 7g of fat,
it’s a must-have! Incorporating fruit instead of a heavier pairing, such as
chocolate, instantly produces a healthier option. But the most important trick
is replacing the majority of cream cheese content with pureed cottage cheese.
We bet nobody will be able to tell the difference!
Pear
Crumble
Pears
are one of our favorite fruits here at Bon’App and we think they are extremely
underused! Try this mouth-watering Pear Crumble at your next holiday
celebration. This yummy alternative has 300 calories and 10g of fat per
serving. The lack of pie crust cuts down on a lot of the calories and although
the addition of oats and walnuts raises the fat content a bit, it is not all
bad fat thanks to the nuts.
