Paleo Diet—Eat like a Caveman?

Share it now.

While the Paleo Diet may be a new addition to a long list of diets, it stems from an old idea.  How old, you ask?  Try thousands of years!  The premise of the Paleo Diet is to eat like our “cavemen” ancestors who only consumed food that was available in a hunter-gatherer diet.  So, how healthy is this lifestyle?
First, let’s start with what you can eat.  The fundamentals of the diet are meat, fish, vegetables, and fruit.  We all know eating lots of fruits and veggies is good for you.  Indeed, your Fiber battery is sure to fill up quickly with these items in your diet.  Furthermore, eating more sustainable seafood will provide you with an excellent source of lean protein and heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.  While lean meats also provide a healthy source of protein, this diet doesn’t restrict which type of meat to eat, which can lead to high amounts of Bad Fat creeping into your diet.
What exactly is off-limits?  Grains, legumes, dairy, salt, and sugar.  Although research has shown the benefits of limiting your intake of processed foods, the Paleo Diet has yet to be supported by scientific research, so we can’t be sure that its net effects are positive.  Now, we know eating less salt and refined sugar is beneficial, but cutting out all of these foods makes it more difficult to get essential vitamins in your diet.  Low-fat dairy, like yogurt and cheese, is a great source of calcium and vitamin D, which help to keep your bones strong.

The bottom line: Without research, we can’t be sure what the health effects of this diet are.  Always be sure to consult your doctor or nutritionist before trying any type of diet.

The Bon'App diet allows you to eat anything you want as long as you stay within your targeted batteries for Sugar, Salt, Bad Fat, and Calories every day. Try it!
